What’s Drinks and Data Rants?
In January, I had an idea that data people should get together and blow off steam about working with data in general. Know how you can sometimes go out to the bar with coworkers after work, and just let off steam about various frustrations? That.
Why? Because data people often work in small teams, or solo. Having peers who ‘get it’ is nice. Also, we can learn from each other. One person’s current pain point may be another' person’s past experience.
How did it go last time?
Surprisingly well! A bunch of people (I think 20-30ish) joined. We crowded out the gotomeeting’s 8 webcam limit… But we had a lot of fun and the total event probably lasted 90 minutes or more.
We learned a lot about the process and I hope this iteration will be even better.
The Format
People can volunteer to rant for up to 5 minutes about anything data related. Then we have roooughly 5 minutes of discussion after. If we’re having a good productive, positive discussion we can let it go on a bit more, but around 5 minutes is expected.
Have a favorite language that no one uses? Hit upon a stupid data issue at work? APIs giving you trouble? See something ridiculous in the news? Want to declare you do everything in Excel? Go for it.
Anyone can speak, you don’t need any experience or credentials. We deliberately don’t ask or check.
We keep going until we run out of talks, or people get tired.
Who else can speak?
Everyone who joins should be able to participate w/ voice chat and webcam (if they want). We only have a list of ranters so that we can be sure that someone will stand up and put forth a topic. Everyone can ask questions, respond, even rant about something else.
Do I have to drink?
No.
But if you did have a beverage, of any sort, no one will judge. Because it’s 9PM and we’re adults.
