A fun little (online) event for data folk
Nothing says class like Dom and plastic cups? (Photo: Randy Au)
One consistent thing about working with data is that there is always something infuriating about it. (Hint: that’s why we have jobs and get paid). And sometimes it’s just fun to get together with other people over a couple of drinks and vent a bit about whatever’s on your mind. This was the inspiration for the informal Drinks’n’DataRant event.
So it’s on, January 4, 2020. roughly 9 PM EST until we run out of speakers or drinks. It’ll all be done online via webconferencing software, so bring your own drinks, attend in your pajamas if you want to.
This was a spur-of-the-moment thing that spawned out of a conversation on twitter. We’ve never really done this before and everything about it is an experiment. I highly encourage everyone who works in (or eventually wants to work in) data to join, even if only to observe. It’s free and won’t cost you anything but your time.
Right now I’m only considering this as a one-off event. If it gets more interesting maybe a bunch of us can figure something out.
Planning and details are being done via a google doc.
There’s no real telling what kind of stuff is going to be covered. While we have a rough plan in the speaker signup sheet, there’s definitely going to be a fair amount of ad-libbing and getting derailed. There’s some light moderation to make sure things stay interesting but it’s pretty much expected that we’re going to go slightly off-topic.
As of this writing there’s over 25 people who have expressed interest in attending and/or speaking. That’s a fair enough crowd but I think we can do better.
Meanwhile, I’ve got to settle down and pick a single topic to rant about… Picking one is hard.
Hope to see you there!
