For me, the practice of craft in applied statistics and data analysis (aka DS) is the patient work of excavating the questions that the data can answer beyond the immediate questions posed (the “in the craft part”). All praise to John Tukey.

I swear the life of every researcher working in industry is learning polite way s of saying "wtf are you even trying to do here?" An art form until itself.

In the 70s, I worked as a consultant scoping environmental impact statements until the settled down to the present model of “discuss absolutely anything possible.” What it came down to was “we think we have a problem, we aren’t sure what it is, but we will pay you to take all the blame if you can’t deflect all criticism of whatever you come up with.
